Edward Furlong spoke to ScienceFiction.com about possibly reprising the role of John Connor as an adult in a future Terminator movie, what made T2 great, James Cameron, and future projects.
Its been nearly 30 years since the release of ‘Terminator 2: Judgement Day’, which is highly regarded as one of the greatest science fiction films of all time, looking back on the film now three decades later, what do you think it is that makes it hold up so well?
ScienceFiction.com
Uh… because I’m in it! But really, you know, it’s Jim Cameron man! He’s a genius. I mean all of his movies are really really good. I couldn’t tell you why else, I don’t know man. There’s like a magic thing with that movie, it’s crazy. Even today kids are still coming up to me loving that movie! I haven’t seen it in… I couldn’t tell you. I can’t even remember. But it’s just one of those movies that holds up so well. It’s timeless.
Edward Furlong
Do you find it difficult to watch your own work?
ScienceFiction.com
Yes, I do. And as I get older it gets harder and harder to watch myself.
Edward Furlong
‘T2’ was your first movie gig and launched your entire career, is there anything you would have done differently?
ScienceFiction.com
Nothing.
Edward Furlong
Nothing?
ScienceFiction.com
Nothing! Not even the mistakes man. Well… maybe a couple of ’em. Like if I could go back in time I would make a lot more money haha. But really? I wouldn’t take back a thing man.
Edward Furlong
The ‘Terminator’ franchise is coming back in a big way later this year with ‘Terminator: Dark Fate’, which brings back Linda Hamilton as Sarah Conner and of course Arnold Schwarzenegger as the T-800! Would you ever pursue returning to the franchise as an adult John Conner?
ScienceFiction.com
Without a doubt! That would be awesome and I think fans would love to see it!
Edward Furlong
Can you tell us a bit about some of your upcoming projects?
ScienceFiction.com
Honestly? There’s none right now. I was thinking about getting into porn! But really, I’ve been slow this last year and a half working on getting my life back on track and getting sober. Hopefully, things will turn around!
Edward Furlong
Are you excited by the idea of John Connor returning in a future Terminator movie like in a sequel to Terminator: Dark Fate, or another reboot (if the film doesn’t capture the hearts of the fanbase)?

As much as I loved Eddie in T2, I just don’t see it happening. “I thought about getting into porn, yeah!!” haha… he should focus on himself. I had some hopes he’d somehow return but I don’t think it would work.
He wasn’t meant to be adult John Connor.
He didn’t grow up to look like Connor nor did he maintain the type of aura that got him cast in the first place. He lived the life of a child actor and paid the price for it. It’s no one’s fault. Terminator fans may be very nostalgic for Eddie but the character of adult John Connor is beyond even greats like Christian Bale and Jason Clarke. Even acting heavyweights cannot get the character across in the way he’s been immortalized.
Eddie is one of the last people who could play John Connor and make it work. At most, he would look like the kid who played John. That would be the only advantage in casting him. In every other arena, it would reduce the Connor character.
But…
We are getting another teenage John Connor. It stands a chance that Eddie can still do ADR dialogue work for that CGI character. They could then pitch correct it to make him sound like a child. Eddie does have a distinctive way of talking and I do feel that it’s the least they can do for him, if they are indeed retiring the character.
Seriously, every actors in T2 are too old now.
Eddward Furlong is charismatic actor, but adult John Connor should be soldier and I cant imagine Eddie as soldier. Nick Stahl also not good choice same Jason Clark was bad cast. Christian Bale was quite good but I think adult John Connor can be Tom Hopper.
He is John Connor and his battle scars / aging life rehab scars can make this work. He has the Charisma just mix it with serious acting, some anger and intensity, the occasional humor and kicking ass with him being even more tech savvy and you got it!
I hope Eddie does get himself and his life together, we all have need improvement in ourselves and our own lives. God bless you Eddie Furlong.
