*WARNING: This Article MAY Contain SPOILERS.
According to Reddit thread r/Terminator, there has been a huge T:DF plot leak which uncovers the story of the new movie, and, if true, might just shake the very foundations of the Terminator franchise and its fanbase to the core.
The ‘leaker’ apparently has a reputation for leaking important storylines for big blockbuster movie franchises, something he did with The Last Jedi and (according to an archived Star Wars thread) apparently what the leaker had to say (pre-release of the movie) was later confirmed to be true.
Some of the information which is said to be “leaked” is eerily similar to some of our very own theories regarding Terminator: Dark Fate, ie,- John Connor has been killed after the events of T2 by a T-800, who then goes on to work alongside Sarah Connor to fight Skynet. Skynet sends back multiple T-800s at the same time to kill John Connor, that Judgment Day is simply delayed and due to that delay – the timeline and its specifics are changed.
Could this also mean that our theory about time-travelling Sarah Connor is true?
Is it possible that the “leaker” has hit the jackpot once again with information regarding a tent-pole franchise and its prospective plot? Or, could “Deep-throat” have an eye on the fan community and simply be doing the maths of a possible outcome based on fact, theory and conjecture?
One thing is certain, if this information is true… this might just be a bad omen for all those Terminator Fans wondering at the absence of the future leader of mankind, John Connor, and the possible excessive use of time-travel, multiple timelines and a Terminator living a normal life running a drapery company… ?
Oh, yeah, let’s not forget Terminator Genisys’ use of an all-seeing-all-knowing T-800 with a vast knowledge of “nexus points”… has that been re-purposed for Terminator: Dark Fate along with a few other aspects from the now non-canon instalments? Hmmm…

So far, this upcoming new TERMINATOR sequel looks and sounds like J.J. Abrams’ TERMINATOR:GENESYS 2.0 .
Killing John Connor off is such a mistake in my eyes. I would be so disappointed if that is true. I just don’t get why they cant write a film with John Connor in the lead role to fulfill what he ultimately should be. The leader of the resistance!! No need to change the future, its been written, just shows us how he gets there. Especially here in the movie! Come on man! I thought you said you were going to ignore all films after t2? Maker a real movie, with a great script. Not another popcorn film for $$$$
Honestly, killing John and phasing out Schwarzenegger is the only way to take this franchise forward.
– Arnold is 71. They’re clutching at the threads of credibility to keep him in this franchise. This movie needs to be complete and irreversible closure for his character.
– John Connor becomes the leader of the human resistance. We fight the machines and win. This is all old hat. But what if John no longer exists anymore and Skynet destroys mankind in the future, and nobody knows who the target is or who they will become? The franchise becomes, tense, mysterious and uncertain again.
This was kind of the path followed by Rise of the Machines and Salvation. At this point, I think a sequel to Salvation would have been much more interesting.
Only for it to be rehashed with a new, more progressive/modern cast, as we’ll inevitably see come November. Not me, though. I’m skipping out on the trash fire, same with Star Wars.
There’s no point in bringing back a classic old franchise if you’re going to disgrace or kill off the old cast to make way for the new. It’s in bad taste. All talk of moving on and passing the torch is just that: talk. Empty, cliched, cynical justification to do whatever they want.
I understand wanting to see something interesting done with the franchise. Some new twist or revelation about the story that we didn’t know before. But it doesn’t mean anything if you’re just going to change the story (only to rehash it) or subvert expectations. All it means is you want to use an established franchise to either cash out quick or gamble for yet another tentpole trilogy or cinematic universe. I’m sick of seeing old franchises getting trashed and their fans disrespected like this. Celebrate the old and move on. Nihilistic attitudes and shock value are bullshit. Hollywood is out of ideas and just full of people getting paid to jerk each other off.
Mind you, I’d also like to give Arnold’s Terminator a rest and get somebody new, like The Rock or something. I’d also like to go back to basics with an R-rated horror chase that’s light on the technobabble. Simplicity is key.
Once the future is written, it cant be changed no matter what you try to do…I get that you want to see another version of what if John was killed…..You forget we loved the story of T1 and T2 about Sarah and John….Changing the story becomes irrelevant. At least Salvation had the idea of John Connor taking charge and becoming the leader but the execution of the film was just awful (promising but awful script/director)
Love Arnold but his time is over. i like the idea of having a younger T-800 (CGI) with his voice. But his old age and playing and older T-800 is ridiculous. Disliked him in Genysis as pops…….He is better off playing the human form of his model or be a scientist who created the technology or something like that. He is ruining the franchise, sorry but its true…he should know better and so does Jim Cameron.
“Once the future is written, it cant be changed no matter what you try to do…”
That is literally the opposite of what T1 and T2 are about.
Really, I’ll have to watch it again without wine in my hand…..the future is inevitable (unavoidable)
T1 & T2 – ‘There is no fate but what we make for ourselves.’ (John Connor/Kyle Reese)
T3 – ‘Judgment Day is inevitable.’
Another reason why I strongly dislike T3, because it threw the core message of the franchise out with the trash.
I think he’s right. As much as I love T2, I think in hindsight I’d rather have seen films that told more about the story of the time loop, all the way up to the end of the Future War in 2029. At least then there would’ve been more room to establish or argue for the possibility of breaking the time loop, with the events of T2 serving as the final Terminator film that either breaks the loop or affirms it can’t be broken.
John has to grow up and send Kyle back to protect his mom and become his dad so that he’s born. That’s always been the one constant comfort and thing that has to happen for this story and world to work. T2 is my favorite movie and I also love T1, so please don’t ever mess those up or the lore that is established! They can make a poignant, meaningful, exciting film with important themes and great practical effects and action and stunts just like back in the day, without any need to rewrite or muddy the rules. The only thing I would have done differently in the trailer is start it off with the tech noire club from T1, with a voice over from Sarah Conner. And maybe add the blue tint that makes the first two movies so atmospheric and cold and lends that unsettling feeling that we’re trying to stop the future from the past/present. I don’t know why the trailer is so yellow and bright. Also, I miss the synth music and traditional score.
I’m excited because I love world and themes and characters of these movies, especially T1 and 2. If James Cameron, Linda Hamilton and Arnold Schwarzenegger are all involved, I bet it will be great. My only concerns / questions are why is the color scheme so bright yellow (like logan) when T1 and 2 had the cold, dark blue tint, and, why didn’t they play synth music or traditional terminator score? I love the music from the 1st two terminators, it has a metal, coldness to it yet also a deep emotion that makes me think of future and past, and striving to stop the future from happening that we cause, and sending a friend back in time to become his father, as well as the love between mother and son (Sarah and John), father figure and boy (terminator and John), and of course Kyle and Sarah – it all makes you think a lot!
Also, if I did the trailer, I would have started it in the club from The Terminator, where the synth music was playing and harken back to that, with maybe a voice over from Sarah Conner. This trailer looked like marvel and not the gritty, cold, tech stuff that I think it could have benefited from. The idea of the movie being a constant chase scene is cool and as long as they make it exhausting and frightening like The Terminator was, which was basically a constant hunt/ pursuit, then it has lots of potential. I just hope they don’t skimp on the important messages and themes that were very scary and still a possibility for our own future – which James Cameron’s first two terminator movies were awakening us to be mindful of that very real future where a.i. could wake up and in less than a second decide we are to be eliminated.
“John has to grow up and send Kyle back to protect his mom and become his dad so that he’s born. That’s always been the one constant comfort and thing that has to happen for this story and world to work.”
so we think…BUT that’s the biggest plot-hole that Jim Cameron couldn’t avoid.
We all know that John Connor (son of Sarah) sent Kyle back to protect her, it is 100% possiblr, but THE John who sent Kyle IS NOT Kyle’s son. why? because in the very first timeline, very very first, before Kyle even was there Sara did give birth to John, but father wasn’t Kyle, and that’s THE John who originally send Kyle. But when Kyle arrived, Timeline #1 was happening, (where Kyle is from the future where John isn’t his son) which we saw in T1, and when Kyle and Sara had sex timeline changed because Sarah got pregnant with John from Kyle and altered the future, making it Timeline #2, possibly even made John a bit older in the future and made him different John, because different DNA and stuff, and even maybe not a savior of Humanity. And that’s why in Terminator 2 we still had Judgement day, but a bit later on. Like “we didn’t stop it, only bought ourselves some time”. but we shouldn’t forget that original John who send Kyle back in time isn’t Kyle’s son, that’s how time travel works.
NOT a plot hole! It’s a basic time paradox….
I like the leaked plot very very much
“Alternating” timeline still need to build connection to old one, specifically LEGION need to somehow connect to Skynet, or an entire different rogue AI develop same type of Time Travel (Grace still naked) is simply unconvincing.
Unfortunately, old T3 does better job on this (Skynet in this version is more or less carried over from T2).
Multi unknown terminators from original future: good. better than terminator per timeline.
Hope they actually carried idea from near-canon comic “Cybernetic Dawn,” maybe LEGION is developed from leftover of other defunct terminators?
Death of John Connor: mixed
Skynet is gone, along with its nemesis. Can be dramatic if used in right context.
-But the whole “people had ennough of John Connor” because of those shouldn’t be “sequels”
Carl the T-800 killed John without kill Sarah along the way: bad.
It should kill Sarah as to prevent her from carring knowledge of Judgment Day to others. In T2 the trio did their best to ensure no one carries Dyson’s work. T2 Infiltrator novel trilogy had more convincing concept: Skynet knows alternating history also put its own entire existence in risk, so Terminator’s priority being termination with preserving history being secondary, while Infiltrator series priority mission being guiding history with termination of Connors being secondary.
Carl the T-800 developed conscience after lost purpose: horror.
Forced plot for the sake of it. I prefer Arnold as human fugitive who’s charged for what he didn’t commit. (Terrorist attack on Police Station and Cyberdyne, anyone?)
Clash of terminators from different timelines: can be great but risky.
“Honestly, if they’re smart they’ll do what the sonic movie is doing”
“How could there be an early edit private screening 5 months before release. It’s too early for it to be true. If we were in August I”d believe it.”
“This is extremely common in the industry, they do this so have enough time for last-minute reshoots and still meet the deadline for the release.”
Provided they actually knows what should be done.
“Make Dani Ramos a super important character in the future, like the person who developed the tech to hack terminators or the reason skynet’s defense grid was smashed.”
Assault of Mount Cheyenne! Hell yeah!
Okay just to clarify, for all those saying ‘Kyle has to travel back for John to exist’ and that Terminator supports the same singular timeline time-travel logic of Back to the Future.
No it doesn’t.
Terminator uses a branching timeline logic, which means if something materially exists, even though it’s from a future that no longer occurs, it doesn’t just vanish into thin air ala BTTF.
Case in point, at the end of T2, they melt the arm and the chip, and the T800 is still there. Infact, he gets lowered into the steel because ‘there is one more chip,’ meaning if the T800 hadn’t made that sacrifice, it would’ve continued to exist as an ‘orphaned’ object in that timeline.
This is how they’re dealing with the T800 in the new movie. The prior Skynet timeline was averted with the assault on Cyberdyne and destruction of the arm and chip in T2, but any T800 that was sent back prior to that is still ‘orphaned’ in this timeline.
It does mean though, that when Schwarzenegger is destroyed at the end of this movie, and the movie spawns sequels, Schwarzenegger is out of this franchise for good. I think, considering his age, that’s a good thing. It’s time to move on.
I hope this is a fake. It looks like another iteration of Genisys mistakes.
If this is true, it sounds like a horrible, uninspired hodge-podge mashup of ideas taken from Rise of The Machines, and Genisys. Although I enjoy the idea of two opposing apocalyptic futures warring with one another, eliminating John Connor’s character is a huge disappointment. Kind of expected, but a really cheap cop out, if you ask me. So much of the plot revealed thus far comes across as generic, right down to T-800 terminating the REV-9 with a power cell. Isn’t that how they canned the villain in T3?
Dark Fate will be the series of death spasms that mark the end of the franchise as we knew it. Expect a lot more schlock to come, in the same vein as Episodes VII-IX.
T1 and T2 are the ONLY Terminator Movies! Anything else after it doesnt exist to me.
I remember James Cameron once said that he was angry because in Alien 3 they killed 2 characters that were important in the movie of Alien 2, and he also said that they could have done much more with them instead of killing them. Why would I do the same with John Connor?
I don’t think he’s the same guy he used to be in the 80s and 90s.
Looks like i will be skipping this movie. At least I got some great books and some really cool dark horse comics back in the 90’s to be the sequels I wanted.
If these leaks, namely 1st one, I can’t even begin to not.
