Terminator: Dark Fate Director Tim Miller Addresses Critics + Fan ‘Bitterness’

Terminator: Dark Fate director, Tim Miller, sat down with website BoxOfficePro to discuss how he handles criticism of his new movie and the past disappointments of the Terminator fanbase…

    BoxOfficePro asked:

“So James was involved in this one, obviously, and he wasn’t involved in the last few. Was his involvement part of the appeal in you coming on board and directing this?”

    BoxOfficepro

“Well, I was already on board. But one of the things maybe [that] would have changed my mind [is] if he hadn’t come back. Because one of the first things I said was, the first thing we need to do to make the fans feel like it’s not just going to be another of those sh–[pauses]–I’m not gonna say that. There’s not going to be another in the vein of the [last few] movies. Jim being there means a couple of things. It means that we can get his input on what’s the continuation of that story after T2, but it also is some sort of guarantee of verisimilitude, of accuracy, whatever you want to call it. Some sort of seal of quality that the franchise was going to be handled at least in a way that the original filmmaker would want.

So I thought that was really important, because people had, I think, lost hope. They still have. I mean, you see the reviews coming in are really mixed. I mean, I wouldn’t say mixed, maybe that’s not the right word. Polarized would be a better word. And I think that the people that hate it seem to be people that hate it for reasons that are beyond my control. They hate it because it’s the sixth movie, and Hollywood should be making original movies and not repeating franchises or beating a dead horse blah, blah, blah. It seems that they were, in many ways, pre-decided– “

    Tim Miller

“Predisposed to not like the film.”

    BoxOfficePro

“Yeah. and I can’t do anything about that.”

    Tim Miller

“So reading those bad reviews, it doesn’t bother you?”

    BoxOfficePro

“I expect–in fact, the ones that are great kind of make you feel good, because I feel that is a more accurate representation. All the cast and all the crew–even I don’t feel like it’s better than Terminator 2 or anything like that, but it was never going to be better than Terminator 2. You can’t go back in time and relive the nostalgia of that moment when you watch those movies for the first time. Even someone as young as yourself, you still probably watched the movie when you were young. And it had an effect on you.

So I knew I couldn’t compete with those movies, I just wanted to make a good movie and I wanted to continue Sarah’s story with Linda doing it, and those are all things that we did. I don’t feel like I left anything on the field. We all put our heart and soul into it. And if people are going to hate it, I feel like it’d be nice if they judged it for what it is instead of heaping their past disappointments onto it. But you know, I didn’t expect that not to happen. You know, I don’t give a fuck.”

    Tim Miller

“You go into it with a pretty healthy attitude, it sounds like.”

    BoxOfficePro

“Yeah. I mean look, you want people to like it, but there’s only so much you can control of people’s perception. I can’t change their past bitterness. But I knew it was there.”

    Tim Miller

    Polarising? Yes.
    Reliving nostalgia… Attempted? Yes.
    Succeeded? Mixed reviews.

The issue I take with Tim Miller’s statements is the suggestion that fans have no right to question his vision or direction. No right to have concerns, and that every person who ‘hated’, disliked or didn’t care about Terminator: Dark Fate had “heaped” their “past bitterness” and “disappointments” onto the new movie – making every non-positive review an attack.
This is not a healthy way to view opinions (or criticism) that don’t align with your own, i.e. ‘I only take in views that I agree with’.
Selective affirmation is not a substitute for the truth – and though opinions are subjective (as is taste), closing your eyes, ears and mind to opposing ideas will be harmful in the long-term. Not everyone is a ‘Yes’ man.

The Terminator franchise has had a long and bumpy road but many fans have dug in and hoped for the series to return to some kind of glory – loyalty isn’t something the fanbase is lacking, and concerns are perfectly normal.

Perhaps Mr. Miller should ask himself why the first two Terminator movies were so successful in the first place, before seeking to place blame… ?

You’re the one that wrote it you jack ass. You just don’t want to take responsibility for ruining the franchise. Fuck you and your shitty ideas. You are done. Good luck cleaning toilets because that’s what you deserve to be doing. Cleaning shit instead of making it.

“I wanted to continue Sarah’s story”

You’re a dickhead. It was never Sarah’s story. It was is and always will be John’s story you fucken muppet.

      Tim is right.
Like him, I will also say, I DON’T GIVE A F….K About haters or shitty audiences who dumped this best movie since t-2!!!!
69-70% rotten tomatoes score is no joke. But, what the audiences did?? Oh, they f..king dumped it cause they have always wanted to bury this starting from 2003/2009.
I will say now that : today’s world is full of hatred and this is taking all the good manners from them, wherever i go I found the f…king goddamm negativity.
Jim should make up his mind strong like a titanium, like Tim is and continue his three arc trilogy and end it with good legacy. If he will left it again , then terminator is no more.
Remember, he made t-1 famous which is 80 million dollar budget, so he can do anything.
So, delay your avatar sequels again and end your creation, your three arc plan.
I don’t care if it bombs, it is now or never.
May God save TDF and Terminator’s fate.

I understand your sentiment about negativity because I enjoy T3 and T4 and think they get too much criticism but the creative decision to kill John was the worst mistake you could ever make to the point of insanity. That decision killed the.franchise. It’s over. And no amount of internet ranting will change this and Tim Miller and Cameron deserve all the negativity and criticism for this decision because that is part of being an artist…it comes with the territory. And that decision was so poor that I have no sympathy for them whatsoever. And it’s is fallacious to keep referring to Rotten tomatoes as some sort of valid measurement of this films worth. Modern film criticism is a joke and all about access to screenings. But I digress. If you like the film. Fine. But Miller and Cameron are.only making things worse by saying I don’t give a f____. It seems like Every time one of these film makers attacks the audience the studio loses millions…who would have thought?

I totally agree with you. Th decision to kill John was the worst one they made. Without that, if John would be alive in the Dark Fate story, maybe things could be better, I don’t dislike the movie but I hate they killed John Connor, it’s like kill the protagonist of the movies,

Really! If he wanted to continue Sarah’s story he should have not killed John. He ended her story when he killed her son…Kyle Reese and Sarah Connor’s child.

I understand, but that’s the reason why the movie flopped in the first place with Tim’s attitude of not caring and respecting the storyline. So his actions will bring out a movie that cost them allot of loss and his future. The challenge is how to continue Judgment Day and ending it by saving humans without killing the original characters legacy. That’s the challenge and will shown how potential he is but in this case he wasn’t the best decision. Perhaps they should of really thought it through very well before going this route and we all know why. It was a risk that very much cost them allot and still haven’t learned there lesson.

Poor guy, hes feeling the burn and being defensive whaaaaah. He is simply out of touch with what made the first two great (dont dare read what the fans are interested in seeing). I’m sure he tried his best but knows that his ship is now taking on water…bail mf bail! Hahahaha. James Cameron is on another level. Tim waded into deep water and is drowning. Hes slowly realising how much money this is going to cost. He cant fill Camerons shoes. Nice try but he should stick to Deadpool.

Most people will agree that T1 and T2 were great films. The other films, not so much. The comment section is for opinions. Jim was on DF so that it would help promote the film. He had to input something since his name was on this movie. He was affected by collateral damage from Tim. Many movies that Jim directed were great. Terminator belongs to Jim. Tim either never saw the first two films or didnt know what made them great. If you’ve read any threads on the subject, im sure you’ve seen that your everyday average person knew what made the movie great.

Ever consider you critics and fans might be the problem.
Sure dark fate isnt perfect and artistically there are some slight shortcomings.
But by and large this is the true 3rd movie in franchise.
Linda is more accessable this time around and gives relatable performance.
Arnie expands on terminator 2 nicely.
John connors death is fine as it gives sarah all the fuel she needs.
      Now back to the critics!!!
Ive followed terminator since 1984 and you so called fans are self entitled narrow minded assholes.
Youre problem is you focus on the 20 % of the movie that isnt perfect.
The tragedy is theres 80% of the movie that is really good.
The same went for last jedi
You abused rian johnson and now its tim millers turn.
If you mongrels dont want these movies fine piss off and let the rest of us enjoy.
For me im looking forward to seeing sarah connor again on blueray.
Ive been in love with her since i was 12.
And now i can grow old with her too.

The Terminator being a beta husband who makes Drapes haha COME ON! 80% good? you liked the film? happy for you! But the more you think about it T2 is wrapped up, theres only 2 movies that are cannon, the fans know it and So does James Cameron thats why he won’t touch the thing.

All I want is a good time at the movies.

There are plenty hater of this movie capable of pointing out what’s wrong and also said there’s not much WOKE element to f- with, but with each legitimate hater, there are dozens of dozen other people who simply jump in scream this movie SJW, LGBT1000, WOKE-broke, blah, blah, which flood out “legitimate” criticism.
They simply wish this movie’s failure can prove how deserving it is to anything they WANT to be SJW/WOKE things.
Same for The Last Jedi, “legitimate” haters rightfully complain being labeled as woman haters etc., which is because those roaches simply infiltrate everywhere, every fandom.

No. I really wish the movie was good. But when comparing Brolin in Deadpool 2 (originally he should be Terminator in Salvation and now he playing cyborg in D2) and action in the new Terminator, the choreography scenario is much better in Deadpool than the new Terminator. And D2 its Deadpool’s Marvel (comics) – action can be cartoonish 😉 New Terminator looks really bad – speed and “to be bigger” is not everything.

Try to think about it differently – fans see Terminator as a killer. Something like an immortal cold-blooded scifi serial killer from the future … can you imagine a serial killer movie, who is full of “big CG fights”? For example someone like scifi Dahmer or Bundy?

Cammeron and Hollywood today are like Terminator 2: 3d. But from my point of view it was a CG crap that was made just to dazzle on a big screen in amusement park. But that’s a problem. Today’s film should make you think a little bit, affect the feelings, rather than just wow effects and not to be bored … this is a very low bar that can’t last long and its not for everyone – only for a small target group.

And wrong? I think they are tired to explain again and again. Where is brutality? You really saw Terminator making pirhuettes in T2? Flying cars? If something was crashed (car or helicopter), it doesnt explode just like that – even crashed truck had short circuit on ignition. Nobody jumps from exploding car or helicopter. Maybe less but more intensive. Even every death had a meaning in telling the story – for example, collateral damage in Galleria has a reason (John is the target, everyone is secondary – pure calculus)…

and to finish, i really wanted to see it after it bombed since there is no hope of breaking even, and to be sure i spent the least amount of money i wanted to see it during a weekday noon screening, but this cuck Tim made me hate this movie so much, after seeing the screener and wanting to at least see the CGI in better quality, that i do not even want to go to the cinema anymore and will just pirate it. Fuck you Paramount for letting this happen, you will not see a cent from me!

Wow so much “Heat” and Emotipns here in the comments section.
I have watched the Movie at the Cinema to Support the Franchise. Seriously thats the least that i can do as a Fan. But honestly i really expected something more Epic, something that could take my Viewing and Feeling experience to the next Level. Honestly T:DF just provided me good familiar stuff, but nothing that i expected or even surprised me in a shocking good way. I mean the Actors were great compared to other Action Blockbuster Movies with forgettable Heroes but Heavy CGI Shots to compensate. This Movie kept a good Balance. But storytellingwise it just didnt add more to the boundaries of the Templates since T1&T2. We had Teasers of fucking badass John Connor against fucking badass killer Robots in Epic Future War Scenes with Epic Pulse Lasers Shootouts in the Shadow of the Night. Fuck you Made me so hungry for this Future, how young John Connor turned to the badass Commander of the Desperate Résistance. For more than two decades, ow crap three decades we waited to see the Sequel Movie that you teased&trailered us in T1&T2. Fucking Booh to the Producers to not even realize that they should deliver something that would satisfy our Hunger. Now you simply reboot everything by Just Killing offf the Fan-Favorite Hero Kid? You don’t even know how to make Big Money with your loyal Fans. Forget the Haters, Focus on the loyal Fans, Dude! But YOU didnt Care, you just say – FUCK YOU to us Fans by Subverting the Expectations that was teased in the Beloved Prequels.

it was a Disappointment compared to T1&T2. It wasnt even close to 50% of the Epicness and Creativity of T1&T2. It feels like SW:TFA Mixed with SW:TLJ. Recycle/Remix the Story and Components of T1&T2, but Not even in a great way, because everything feels inferior. E.g. Linda Hamilton was great again, but inferior to her T2 Portrayal. Arnold the same but also even worse. He is a Sidekick now for good Jokes. Mackenzie, great Perfomance, maybe the best of the Movie, close to Michael Biehn/Kyle Reese, but He could express way more Emotions with less Actions. Natalia/Dani – the new Young Hero Kid, which overall couldnt touch me emotionally like inexperienced Edward Furlong could. Maybe my Expectations for Acting are too High? I don’t think so. I Just need the convincing Feeling, it’s Not too difficult. Just some few intimate scenes, showing what happens INSIDE of the Character. There was only 1 Scene that was okayish – Linda when she met Carl and the silent Moment thereafter. So If you subvert Expectations negatively and then also Show inferior stuff in the Rest of the Movie, then it is not the Fault of the Fans who Ruins the Franchise. It’s the Producers who couldnt meet the customers expected Quality.

Don’t give a Fuck? Well, thats really Brave to say when you lose so much Money.

I wanted to like this film. At the end, I left feeling sad inside for fans and cast. I really wanted John Connor back as the hero fighting side by side with his mom Sarah and see the destruction of civilization and how humans survived, jump into future war at end and sequel could’ve continued that story on how John took charge like in T2 future scenes……..Simple….. Love T1 and T2, soft spot for T3 and T4 (didn’t like Genisys – maybe due to Jai Courtney playing Reese ). I also feel Arnold needs to be done being a terminator. Not feeling him at all in this role, pass the torch man! Play a human scientist that created the machine or something like that….For now, I’m done and this version is very silly to me.

To John Connor! Our savior! Bring him back Jim!

False! If the audience hated is that the story is only a reboot of T1. There is no originality in your story but especially for me it’s the fate of the T800. Serious, a terminator who gets married, changes diapers, has a dog? .. In T2 the terminator included human feelings. And that’s all !

Just imagine in this day and age two male heroes that you are absolutely supposed to like and care about making the kind of comments/expressions that Sarah and Grace do towards the opposite gender WITHOUT their views challenged and corrected hard in some way or another throughout the movie, even in the original 1984 when asked how women fare in the post-apocalyptic future war that Kyle Reese arrived from, Kyle answers without hesitation “GREAT FIGHTERS !” so excuse me Mr.Miller can you please explain where exactly this sense of resentment and retaliation against John and Kyle is coming from that you felt was needed to be injected into the movie ? why did you decided that you need to bludgeon the audiences over the head with a metaphorical sledgehammer to reveal Dani’s role in the Legion-based future war ?

Also Mr.Miller i couldn’t help but notice that you are very fond of saying “i don’t give a fuck” which is ironic because it looks like that particular sentiment is shared by all the missing audiences, enjoy your damaged reputation for the next decade.

My issue with Dark Fate is from the start we see that John is dead. All the rumor that john might be in it ended immediately. It left a disappointment that I never recovered from. I had hoped that “Sarah’s story” would have ended with John’s cameo appearing at the end of the movie (albeit with a different storyline) and Sarah stating that she was still protecting him by leaving him off the grid (Cliffhanger for the trilogy). I also felt the action scenes were poor and don’t get me started on the T-800 blending into society as Carl after he kills John (John’s death was too easy and why didn’t the T-800 kill Sarah?). I also took issue with Skynet being made redundant. Why change that part of the story? The Rev-9 was pretty cool and Linda Hamilton was great, despite being a supporting character in this story. As a stand-alone movie it wasn’t too bad. But this is not a Terminator film and the only way to rectify this franchise, in my opinion, is to rely less on CGI action scenes and stick to the story of the main characters. In Dark Fate, the main character should have been Sarah and it was not. Arnie crossing his legs at his home made me want to leave the cinema. Bad Director and too many writers involved.

Killing JC made perfect sense as I always thought it odd in T2 that only one Terminator was sent back. That said, where this does make it difficult is making it the same set up, therefore repeating previous plot yet again. The over woke elements didn’t need to be there as Sarah Connor was, and still is, such a strong female character it just pissed me off particularly the flash back scene which wasn’t needed and was poorly executed / acted. Finally the multiple cheesy, redone self sacrifice ending. To be fair the one thing T3 got right was the ending. With this said did I enjoy the film, overall yes I did, but could I watch it again and again like the first Terminator film and have to say Terminator 2 up to the point of Sarah Conner saying ‘out of the car… Right now!’ after which the film flags for me, no I can’t.

No Tim Miller ..you disrespected fans. If they are predominately male, so be it. What just happened with the Sonic The Hedgehog Movie is what you should consider. Not doing a Ghost in A Shell and be a arrogant prick about what fans wanted. Apparently James Cameron didn’t agree with you and you still did it “you way”. See what arrogance gets you? Stop with polarising predetermined Bs. The problem is you were an arrogant jerk who didn’t care for the people who were going to watch it. Hope whatever agenda you were pushing was worth it ..males consume movies dude. Wake up!

The next project for Tim Miller and James Cameron will be the new Batman trilogy: “Oh, let’s kill Bruce Wayne as a child in the first thirty seconds!” Dickheads!!!

I hope my Englisch ist not too bad!
I was one of those who did not care that three women play the lead role and also that John Connor dies. All I wanted was a movie that rekindles this old Terminator feeling. I was in a positive mood for this movie – and shockend when I watched this nonsense. The worst problems with this film are a) the bad script and b) Tim Miller’s directorial work

      Let’s get to the script:

The first problem ist, how loveless this movie starts. John Connor’s death lasted a minute, then you saw the arrival of Grace and the Rev9 and you’re fully into the action. After 10 minutes of CGI slaughter, I had to mentally reset to give the movie another chance, because I did not care what happened to our characters – so incredibly bad they were introduced to the story.
There’s zero character development in the script, zero drama, zero tension, zero goosebump moments, zero group dynamics, etc. Apparently, none of the writers were aware that the first two Terminator movies are about two things: suspense moments and interpersonal and personal drama. The action just rounds it all off, although of course it comes along in T2 gigantic. The script gives the characters no chance to breathe and develop. There is no kartharsis, no heroic journey, nothing.

The next point is the incredibly poorly written story: The Rev9 can hide weapons in its metal body. This trick is shown only once and it naturally raises the question of why he has not already arrived with weapons in the body. He can imitate people, which he almost never does. The moment he imitated Danny’s father was so badly staged – they did not even try to build up tension here. He can extend tentacles, which he almost never does (the final fight would have been over quickly). He can log into systems, which is only shown twice briefly and one wonders why he does not let more drones fall on our protagonists. He can split into the two pieces and this ability is NEVER played out. It is a gimmick, not more. When I think about it, I can probably come up with a hundred times better scene within 1 hour, where this ability comes across cool and intelligent. And if you combine that ability with the ability to mimic other people, I’d come up with much more cool scenes. All his skills were staged so cheaply and wasted senselessly – an insanity!

Then Grace, who can only fight 5 minutes before she needs medication. One wonders of course, who sends such a soldier naked in the past to fight against a Terminator? Oh yes, of course, Danny herself. Who sends her for the second time, when she swears in the end, that Grace will never die again? And why did not Miller design the time loops as “consist history,” as Cameron has always done? And one wonders why this story with the drugs for Grace was there at all. It was never picked up again after getting the drugs at the pharmacy. Why not? What exciting moments could you have done with that? Danny, in turn, does not develop at all. Believing she is the leader of the Resistance is utterly ridiculous and even more ridiculous is that in 2040 she still looks like a little girl.

And now to Tim Miller’s direction work:

He just can not. Miller can make comic book films, but no serious films and apparently he has always considered Terminator as part of his comic universe, because that’s how the movie has become. It’s a bit ironic that today comic film adaptation like the Joker becomes a serious psychogram, while Terminator slips into the comic genre. But not only that: Miller simply can not build tension and suspense. He also has no idea how to use the camera to evoke a sense of awe, drama, mystery, suspense or horror. He just can not. In addition, he constantly zooms into his action scenes, so that not only loses the overview, but also the interest in what is happening. I do not even want to start talking about the “shaky-cam”, which has nothing to do with Terminator. Miller has shifted the genre of Terminator 1 (horror drama), Terminator 2 (scifi action drama) to a comic adventure story. Yes, the movie had the feel of a bad Indiana Jones movie with too much comic influences. I’m really angry – even on Cameron, that he does this to his legacy. 30 years of hope and then such a nonsense!

That is why the movie was not what it Could have been. Miller didn’t give an F*** about the fans. It is a shame that he began the third film already assuming it wouldn’t be as good as it’s predecessors.
Personally I think sequel creators should have firm knowledge of the plot and characters… or be a fan of the previous movies.

I think Tim Miller is right. How can people say that Dark Fate is the worst movie of the franchise when Genisys exists?
For sure it was not good, but it was not that bad !
You’re all so pissed at John’s death, but seriously, you prefer what they did to John in Genisys?!
And for fuck’s sake, stop crying like babies because women are finally empowered! You shouldn’t be so insecure, really.

I agree with Miller. Seriously? Fans are pissed because John Connor dies in the beginning of the movie? And they have no problem with what happened to the character in Genisys?
Well, for sure it is not a very good movie but it is not that bad! It is certainly not the worst of the franchise!
And if you’re so insecure that you can’t stand seeing empowered women on screen, I feel sorry for you. Really.

Hello everyone. I am a fan of the Terminator saga, I have seen all the movies and the entire TV serie.
I wanted to make this observation: since “Salvation” the cyborgs no longer seem unstoppable as they were in the first two films, but they can be deactivated (or destroyed) quite easily (think how Sarah Connor manages to stop the young T-800 with a single blow while battling the old T-800 in “Genisys” at the beginning of the film). In my opinion this poor resistance of the cyborgs makes them less scary and has contributed to reduce the quality of the saga.
Cyborgs seem more or less resistant depending on the circumstances, without there being realism in what you see in the films (this fact happens in the last three films of the saga but not in “Terminator 3”).
In “The Terminator” the T-800 was progressively damaged and then crushed in the hydraulic press by Sarah Connor. In “Dark Destiny” the Rev-9 is only damaged in the final battle, before it is always indestructible (with its metal endoskeleton).
