Guns N’ Roses and their song ‘You Could Be Mine‘ are closely associated with Terminator 2: Judgment Day, not only for its use in the movie but also in the fact the official music video starred Arnold Schwarzenegger as the T-800. The music video contained clips from the movie, with Arnold even joining the band for footage created specifically for the video.
It very much seemed like the perfect match – though it appears that Robert Patrick, who played the shape-shifting T-1000, had other ideas…
Mr. Patrick wanted James Cameron to consider another option, with the song “Head Like A Hole” by Nine Inch Nails….
“When I was making Terminator 2, I used to work out to Head Like a Hole by Nine Inch Nails, because my younger brother, Richard Patrick, was a touring guitarist for them. I took it to Jim Cameron and tried to get him to use it for the soundtrack to Terminator 2, but he said: “No. Arnold prefers Guns N’ Roses,” who went on to record You Could Be Mine, an original song for Terminator 2. It’s ironic because Trent Reznor from Nine Inch Nails has won a couple of Oscars for his soundtracks now. I also sing on the Last Rampage movie soundtrack that my brother scored, in a song called Oh Lord. I recorded it live with Alejandro Escovedo at the Moody theater in Austin [Texas].”

‘Head Like A Hole’ does make sense especially in regard to the T-1000 character, but clearly Arnold Schwarzenegger had the final say on the matter.
Robert Patrick did however get to promote his brother’s band by wearing Nine Inch Nails (NIN) pin badges and T-Shirt’s for Terminator 2: Judgment Day promotional photos and ‘making of’ featurettes.
Some Terminator Fans will also know that a trailer for McG’s Terminator Salvation featured the NIN song “The Day The World Went Away”. So in the end, the T-1000 completed its Nine Inch Nails objective.

Nepostism aside, NIN is less mainstream than GNR. T2 is so mainstream it hurts.
They were right to go with GNR.
