Are you a huge Terminator Fan? Or a huge fan of another franchise – to the point where you want to name your child after one of your favorite characters from film / pop culture? We’ve spoken to a number fans who have named their children after awesome Terminator characters like John, Kyle, Connor, Cameron, Reese, Miles and Sarah for example; all great tributes to fandom, whilst also giving a name to your child that might hold a deeper meaning for you – but what if you took it a step too far and named your child TERMINATOR, and as a result of that decision, your child faced years of torment and bullying?
The Terminator might be one of the coolest villains (and heroes) to grace the silver screen, but perhaps naming your child after the character is not such a good idea…
Well, the Mexican state of Hidalgo is putting a stop to the use of… exotic(?) names. For those fans who want to name their children after their favorite singer / celebrity, or characters like Terminator, Batman and even Rocky (although we believe Rocky should be reconsidered, as it is in fact an authentic italian name – with meaning, especially if someone has heritage connecting back to Italy) this ruling may make the naming process a more conscious / cautious decision.
An initial set of banned names were implemented back in 2017 as part of family law, as a preventative measure to reduce bullying amongst children. These rules were put in place by local deputy of the National Regeneration Movement party (Morena), Raymundo Lazcano Mejía.
A list of banned names included:
“Gordonia, Cesaria, Caralampio, Indio, Rocky, Terminator, Trapansito, Petrolino, Zoyla Rosa…”
Article 416 of the Law for the Family of the State of Hidalgo states (translated):
“The Official of the Family Status Registry will ensure that those who come to register the minor select a proper name that is not pejorative, discriminatory, denigrating or devoid of meaning.”
Hey, we get it, when you’re a fan of something – you want to share it with the people you love, that’s totally understandable, but maybe consider how that name will be received by the world around you (and how it could age) before committing your family to a future of criticsm and / or ridicule, but that’s pretty much a given… isn’t it?

There’s been more rare (denigrant?) names here in Mexico such as: Scrotum (no, I’m not kidding!), Christmas Day, Gokou, Harry Potter and Hitler, which of course now are forbidden.
This is right decision. There was only three of them
