Terminator: Dark Fate – Defiance Official Description
“Terminator: Dark Fate – Defiance is a real-time strategy game that follows the war between humanity and Legion’s synthetic intelligent machine network. You control a core army, which you carry over from mission to mission on a strategic map. The gameplay is centered around making decisions about units placements and combat to increase replaybility, and deliver a truly action-oriented experience.”
Hot on the heels of Reef Entertainment and Teyon Games‘ recent Terminator: Resistance Annihilation Line DLC; Terminator: Dark Fate – Defiance will offer a single player campaign mode with 13+ levels which will allow players to play as a Commander of humanity’s ‘Founders‘ faction and make their way across a map, targeting multiple objectives.
The founders faction is the equivalent to the United States military post-Judgment Day. Reportedly, Legion, the Resistance and other factions such as cartels will also be an available option for players; with the outcome of the story, and game, being affected by whomever you choose to align yourself with.
This is not the first time the Terminator franchise has ventured into the realm of RTS gaming; Terminator: Resistance (not to be confused with the FPS game), Terminator Genisys: Future War, Terminator: Dark Fate The Game, all stepped into the genre – even Terminator 2: Judgment Day recently made an appearance in War Planet Online. The difference this time being that it will take the graphics up a notch and be playable on the PC only, unless subsequent console deals are made the future.

Features:
Campaign
- Start humanity’s resistance against the machines by surviving engagements with Legion and rallying others to your cause. In the post-Judgement Day world, the greatest threats may not come from the machines but rather from other human survivors.
- Traverse various dangerous locals, find additional allies and supplies and navigate the brutal differences between competing human factions.
- Engage in complex, realistic battles where your tactical decisions are vital to your survival and ultimate victory. Use a variety of military equipment, vehicles and ammunition types in your battles against the enemy. Recruit and train new units, assign new skills and acquire new weapons and equipment to continue the resistance.
- Your battlefield tactics and choices have deep consequences. Your resources are limited and you must protect your army. Weapons of war receive damage through a modular component damage system where armour characteristics, component malfunctions and hull structure all affect if your troops survive.
- Recruit others to your cause and grow your army. Mix and match the composition of your troops to fit your preferred battle tactics. Use infantry units, heavy armoured military vehicles, plasma cannon technology, drones and other flying units and even human skirmishers to achieve victory.
- Use the battlefield to your advantage! Physics-based building demolition lets you generate a realistic set of tactical consequences, especially in urban areas.
- Test your skills in online multiplayer matches.
- Fight against human opponents in 1v1, 2v1, and 2v2 multiplayer matches.
- Lead a detachment of “deserters” forced to fight for their existence, opposing not only machines but also a structured army of the resistance.
- Dive deep into complex, realistic battles where diverse equipment, vehicles, and ammunition vary their impact on the battlefield.
- Protect your army. Damages are calculated by taking into account different armor characteristics, partial malfunctions of vehicle compartments, and hull structure.
- Grow your army! Mix and match small infantry groups with heavily armored military vehicles with plasma cannons, drones, air units, or groups of armed refugee.
- Travel a world that survived the judgment day, control the consumption of your supplies, communicate with survivors and interact with entire factions.
- Train units, assign new skills, and purchase new weapons and equipment.

TERMINATOR: DARK FATE – DEFIANCE
Epsom, UK – December 14, 2021 – In collaboration with Skydance Media, Slitherine is proud to announce the launch of a tactical, real-time strategy PC game based on the Terminator: Dark Fate universe in 2022.
Terminator: Dark Fate – Defiance is set to be a cornerstone of Terminator: Dark Fate lore. Leading a small group of human survivors, players will be challenged to try and avoid extermination and change humanity’s fate. The game features a meaningful and immersive narrative filled with memorable characters as well as constant strategic gameplay decisions that have wide-reaching story repercussions.
“Terminator is one of these rare IPs that crosses the generational boundaries and becomes a universal phenomenon for the ages. We are trying to create an experience that embraces both the depth of modern sci-fi storytelling and the fast-paced gameplay of contemporary RTS. All this while staying true to our roots of complex strategy gaming,” said Marco Minoli, CMO of Slitherine.
“At Skydance, we’re constantly thinking about how we can augment fans’ experiences with the franchises they love,” said Douglas Buffone, VP of Business Development and Franchise Strategy, Skydance Media. “Players will finally be able to jump directly into the Future Wars with an authentic, gritty and brutally tough gameplay experience. Skydance has worked closely with our partners at Slitherine and Cats Who Play to ensure that this is going to be the best Terminator experience ever.”
In the single-player campaign, players take on the role of a commander in the Founders Faction and guide their army to foil Legion’s plan to destroy the last remnants of humanity. The game will also feature skirmish and multiplayer modes, allowing players to take command of three diverse factions of humans and machines: Founders, Legion and Resistance.
Players control a core army that they will carry over from mission to mission on a strategic map. In keeping with the post-apocalyptic setting and to avoid gameplay repetitiveness while increasing replayability, the game is centered around making unit tactical decisions and engaging in real-time combat instead of focusing on base building and resource management.

at least it looks decent, but I couldn’t be bothered about the legion timeline, and more confusingly, it seems t800’s are still in the game. At least give us a skynet faction for skirmishes. Whatever, I’ll stick with resistance
I was interested at first as well until I realized it was Dark Fate. I didn’t hate the movie, but it’s my least favorite Terminator Film. Also, Legion doesn’t look nearly as iconic for this type of game as Skynet does.
I have no idea what these people were thinking. But, according one of the game developers on Steam this was their choice and it’s too late to fix it.
“The game is based on Dark Fate because that is the game that the team decided to make. That is a decision that cannot be changed at this time.
I get that not everyone likes Dark Fate, that is unfortunate but I hope that you will check out the game as it progresses and give it a chance once development is completed.” – Edmon
I just can’t believe this. It makes no financial sense. Even if they didn’t want to license with Studio Canal, and stay with Skydance, why not at least make a unique name that doesn’t tie to Dark Fate and get Skynet instead of Legion and at least get the Genisys T-800. (Some people don’t like this one either, but I’m fine with it and at least it looks like Terminator, unlike Legion.)
I don’t know what’s in that teaser. It almost looks like a T-900 from Terminator 3 War of the Machines with the neon red around it. So, maybe this is a little hope left for this game because that looks a little bit like Skynet if it is a T-900. I will wait and see on buying this if Skynet is in it at all. But, I still can’t believe they chose Dark Date. What a horrible idea.
Good or bad, I’m just glad to see the franchise continuing. These days, even with very high approval rates and fan support, we often see great games and TV shows cancelled because they didn’t quite achieve a benchmark. I can appreciate the risk taken by any company who keeps the passion for this iconic story/set of stories alive. Constructive feedback on games is an important part of keeping players and developers on the same wavelength. This requires an open mind and willingness to give things a try. I also realize that a pessimistic outlook, lack of substantive feedback, and just generally being a hater of something before it’s even released, is not the way to influence the change we really want to see (the very best Terminator games). More likely, it’ll contribute to lower sales, a focus on providing negative feedback, and along with other factors, a lower likelihood that this company or others would be willing to take a chance on this franchise in the future. All that said, I’m sure the game will be worth whatever I pay for it and I’m sure I’ll have fun playing it.
