James Cameron’s Terminator Trilogy Reboot – Arnold Will Pass Baton to New Characters

Well, Jim Cameron will do what he wants to do because he is after all James Cameron but it was always an option to introduce new characters and how better than to “pass the baton”.

But now, ahead of 3D theatre re-release of T2 next month, Cameron says he is in negotiations to oversee a new “three-film arc” if the ongoing issues with the rights to the franchise can be resolved. The rights to make the films have changed several times since the release of the first film, but under US copyright law some rights will revert to Cameron in 2019. Schwarzenegger would be involved “to some extent” in the proposed trilogy but the plan would be to introduce new characters to “pass the baton”.

    Hmmmm…

“The question is — has the franchise run its course or can it be freshened up?,” says Cameron. “Can it still have relevance now where so much of our world is catching up to what was science fiction in the first two films. We live in a world of predator drones and surveillance and big data and emergent AI (artificial intelligence).

“So I am in discussions with David Ellison, who is the current rights holder globally for the Terminator franchise and the rights in the US market revert to me under US copyright law in a year and a half so he and I are talking about what we can do. Right now we are leaning toward doing a three-film arc and reinventing it.”

“We’ll put more meat on the bones if we get past the next couple of hurdles as and when we announce that.”

So, this doesn’t look like a true Terminator 2 Sequel and it is a reboot. It may or may not keep T1 and T2 in the canon but… this is still technically a reboot.

“I think it’s fairly widely known that I don’t have a lot of respect for the films that were made later,” Cameron says. “I was supportive at the time in each case for Arnold’s sake because he is a close friend. He has been a mate of mine since 33 years ago so I was always supportive and never too negative. But they didn’t work for me for various reasons.”

Does this excite us? Do we want this? Not really. Oh well. This is either a very brave move or a foolish one.

Are we getting rid of the Connor bloodline all together and passing the torch to a new one, a new family perhaps? Or are we going into the future war completely leaving T1 and T2 in the past all together?

We wish Jim and co the best of luck because they are going to need it. We are going to keep our minds open but this feels like Déjà vu to those early Terminator Genisys announcements.

Do you think the franchise needs reinventing or did it just need to get back on track to where Jim left the franchise? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below.

    Some additional questions for fans…

How do you feel about Schwarzenegger perhaps not playing a substantial role in the new movies? and also how do you feel about the possibility of Linda Hamilton maybe not getting a return to the franchise as many fans have expressed a wish for? Remembering that she topped a poll for a franchise return (with an more or less equal majority with Mr. Schwarzenegger). Is Ageism the root?

I don’t believe it’s possible to continue T1 and T2 with the same characters as actors are aging. This is main difficulty of all T3s (Rise, Salvation, Genysis, I call them T3s, because they are all attempt to continue T2).
I believe that with today technologies, Terminator has to be reboot as an animation film with a very good 3D graphics and with 3D model of Arnold, Linda, Michael Beihn and Robert Patric. Rebhoot T1 and T2 as an animation film and you can continue keeping catheters forever.

Terminator Genisys was definitely a reboot and not a continuation of T2. It is possible to continue Terminator 2 today but hey ageism is rife in mainstream Hollywood.

Knowing the Mr Cameron is involved makes me feel comfortable looking forward to the film, but seeing that I was interested for more of Arnolds T800 character, and say what you will but I was slightly hoping that the genisys sequels / trilogy would be fulfilled only so Arnold could reprise his role.
Now looking at this, knowing Arnold’s not going to be involved anymore then perhaps a cameo cgi character, I’ve kind of lost interest, Terminators a big budget film why cant they have a cgi Arnold on screen for twenty minutes instead of one minute, and to top it off doesn’t this sounds like the Salvation or Genisys scenario all over again its been tried twice ? you can’t engineer a profitable trilogy, concentrate on a innovative story and faithful film, and if its successful and if people demand more then consider a trilogy ?

CGI cameos age so badly, it won’t be long before the CGI Arnold in Genisys is laughed at as CGI advances over the years. We really don’t understand why anyone would want a CGI Arnold when the real Arnold is alive and still making movies. Everyone is acting like Arnold and his acting career is already dead. Thinking trilogy from the start point is the wrong way to go, we should have a solid standalone movie… which we have been saying for years, meaning the film stands alone like the first 2 movies not that it stands alone as a complete separate entity (like Genisys).

We’ve made clear we want Arnold back as a villain/rogue Terminator but also Linda Hamilton as Sarah Connor.
