Scorpion “Pilot” Review

Robert Patrick stars in Scorpion so we decided to check it out. </scorpion> is an American drama on CBS; the story is loosely based on the life of self-proclaimed genius and computer expert Walter O’Brien. In the series, O’Brien recruits other geniuses to help solve complex, global problems.

Let’s move onto the meat of this review.

This show totes a “based on true events” catch phrase to give the show some merit. I saw that catch phrase advertising the show and then put it to the very back of my mind. Anything that has the phrase “based on true events” usually means the work of fiction in question has been embellished somewhat.

But I could tell that some things just wouldn’t work in the real world; like how they finally end up solving the problem of this episode. However, Justin Lin (he nearly directed Terminator 5) directed this episode so I’m not surprised.

Though, I didn’t mind at all.

Why?

It was entertaining! I felt myself laughing and feeling myself moved in different ways by the episode.

I was attached in different ways to the characters and wanted to see what would happen to them. I am particularly drawn to Walter O’Brien (played by Elyes Gabel) and his sub-plot with Paige Dineen (played by Katharine McPhee) and her son. The sub-plot being how he is going to help her understand her son.

As someone with Asperger’s Syndrome, I liked the speech Walter gave about how Paige’s son shouldn’t feel like he’s wrong for being who he is because of his ability/disability. Because I felt like I was being spoken about.

While Paige clearly screams ‘love interest’ shortly after her appearance on screen, it’s good to see her actually having a use. She helps the team out in ways their high IQs make them horrible at. Walter points out near the very end of the episode that she is needed because of that ability.

What about metal sex-god Robert Patrick?

Well…

The killer Terminator plays Cabe Gallo who has a past history with Walter O’Brien and also puts the team of this show together. It is him who gets the ball rolling for this episode and the series as a whole.

Cabe, at first glance, is an uncaring person who only cares about the mission. That sounds like a Terminator as well as when it is shown he does have feelings for humans, it’s just that he has a different set of morals than most.

And he’d have to have a different set of morals with the difficult job he’s set out to do. Of course my opinion on him may change because of whatever is revealed in the future of this series.

This was a fun and exciting pilot episode, even when there are things that wouldn’t work in the real world. I can’t wait to see what happens next and what Robert Patrick will get to do in his new role.
