Tim Miller Talks About Terminator: Dark Fate and Linda Hamilton’s Return

Terminator Dark Fate Tim Miller Linda Hamilton

Whilst promoting his new Netflix series; Love, Death + Robots at SXSW, Terminator: Dark Fate Director Tim Miller spoke to the Observer and said that he believed Terminator Fans will be Happy with the Terminator movie.

Tim also spoke to SYFY.com at the event, and disclosed further thoughts on the new Terminator movie- as a fan himself, and what interests him and motivated him to move forward with the new instalment in the original story conceived by James Cameron… which was Linda Hamilton’s Sarah Connor.

“I think two things should bring peace of mind to any Terminator fan because it’s what brought me peace of mind: that Jim was coming back and that Linda Hamilton is coming back, I love Arnold, he’s terrific, but to me, it was always Linda’s story, so her coming back is fucking huge. And I can tell you this: she’s fucking amazing in the movie. I could not be happier.”

SYFY.com states:

“Miller says that as both a filmmaker and a fan, having grown up with the first few movies in the transformational sci-fi saga. He’s respectful of the canon and history, and with Cameron on board, he’s able to stay within the bounds of previous stories. Even with time-travel such a fundamental part of the series’ core, it’s not being used in any gratuitous way for storytelling purposes.”

Tim Miller responds about the question of time travel and how heavily/how many instances of it may be used to retcon/fix problems of the franchsise…

“Not as many as you think, I think Jim laid out the rules fairly clearly about how that works.”

On skepticism that the new film may fall short of fan expectations:

“I’m sure that if I was a fan at home and not directing the sixth installment in the Terminator franchise, I would have been going, Oh my God, fucking Terminator 6? Let it die, for fuck’s sake!'” he laughed. “But I’m directing it and I know the story and I know there’s a reason to tell this story and not the least of which is because Sarah Connor never returned to the franchise in the same way and I wanted to see what happens next.”

Previous Terminator Directors- Jonathan Mostow (T3: Rise of the Machines), McG (Terminator Salvation) and Alan Taylor (Terminator Genisys) have all claimed to be “Terminator Fans“, so Tim Miller’s claims of Terminator Fandom might not mean much to many sceptical fans but the movie he has directed will be the final testament to those claims, and maybe he can prove legitimate fandom (something which was not felt from previous directors and their claims) with his actions and the final product.
