Thoughts on Matt Smith in Terminator: Genisys

I am a Whovian, (a fan of the BBC show Doctor Who) and I began watching Doctor Who with Matt Smith’s incarnation of the legendary Time Lord; ever since he left the show, being replaced by Peter Capaldi, I’ve been wanting to see what he’ll do next. What role he’ll undertake.

So when he was set to appear in Terminator: Genisys I had mixed feelings- on one hand I was more than a little excited to see him in something else. On the other hand, I don’t have high hopes for the movie.

So what role could Matt Smith take on in this reboot of the Terminator franchise? We already know he’s an ally of John Connor but not more than that.

What role do I think he would be best for?

While Smith’s role as the Doctor was very bubbly, he could play a character with a dark side too. He could smile and make jokes and say stuff like ‘bow ties are cool’, but could still be a threat to the dark things of the universe.

So I would think that Smith being able to use that lighter side of himself would be to his benefit. Allowing him to utilize his comic mannerisms to make jokes and smile a majority of the time would be a good thing. But, in my opinion he should still be allowed to play a dramatic role for two reasons:

1.) This is a Terminator movie, so the subject matter isn’t the happiest in the world.

2.) Matt Smith can handle a meaty role with some hidden depths and passion to it. His role as the Doctor had both light and shade- hinting at a restrained darkness.

Matt Smith played Christian Bale’s role in an American Psycho theater production

But as he didn’t spend more than a week filming Genisys, the depth of the character won’t have time to be fully explained. Hopefully there will be enough intrigue about his character to deserve two more movies to expand on it. Maybe a Terminator turned insane- as Smith can do crazy and John Connor is more friendly towards Terminators than most. Or one of John’s right hand men?

Or an ally that gets recruited by John towards the end of the movie?
