Terminator: Dark Fate Defiance Suffers Setback As Russian Game Developer Cats Who Play Depart Project

Real-time Terminator strategy game, Terminator: Dark Fate – Defiance, could experience a sizeable delay due to the exit of Russian video game developer Cats Who Play.

Cats Who Play’s full (translated) statement:

“Dear friends, it’s time for us to make an official statement, you can’t hide a pig in a poke, and rumors have already been spreading for some time.
Playing Cats is no longer officially the developer of the Terminator Dark Fate – Defiance strategy.
According to the contractual obligations of the “Cats Who Play” company, all the accumulated materials were transferred to the publisher – the British company Slitherine, which must find a new studio to work on the project or continue development by internal forces.”

Cats Who Play

The game, which was due for release on PC sometime in 2022, was first announced back in December 2021 from Skydance Media and Slitherine Games.

Terminator: Dark Fate – Defiance game description:

“Terminator: Dark Fate – Defiance is a real-time strategy game that follows the war between humanity and Legion’s synthetic intelligent machine network. In the single-player campaign, you take the role of a commander in the Founders faction and guide your army to foil Legion’s plan to destroy humanity. In skirmish and multiplayer modes, play as three very diverse factions: Founders, Legion and Resistance.

You control a core army, which you carry over from mission to mission on a strategic map. The gameplay is centered around making decisions about units placements and combat to increase replaybility, and deliver a truly action-oriented experience.”

Slitherine Games

Cats Who Play are best known for the RTS (Real Time Strategy Game) Syrian Warfare, which was released in 2017 on Steam.

The Russian invasion of Ukraine is clearly a contributing factor in regards to the decision for Cats Who Play to depart the T:DF – Defiance project.

It goes without saying that any content / assets which were covered by the contract between Cats Who Play, Slitherine and Skydance will already legally belong to the license holders – though it is currently unknown as to whether the game is close enough to completion for a third party to finish the project to schedule.

Hopefully Terminator Fans who were anticipating a 2022 release won’t be too disappointed.
