Terminator 5 to be Sequel to First Two Terminator Movies?

Alan Taylor Terminator

Alan Taylor; the rumored director of ‘Terminator’ has now confirmed it is a rumor but he is not willing to say if he has signed on as director yet and it seems his agent is advising him on what he can and cannot say in regard to the fifth Terminator movie.

While doing press on his first real movie Thor 2: The Dark World he said the following when asked about ‘Terminator’…

“Funny thing was it came out really early, a reminder of what the blogosphere can do. I had one conversation, didn’t tell anyone and then all of a sudden, BOOM, it was online the next day. So my agent said, ‘You probably should know [this is gonna come up].’ It’s progressed a lot since then, but I’m still officially going to call it a rumor. I’m under the personal policy to say it’s a rumor.”

So does this mean he slipped up and revealed the news too early? Possibly. He could indeed be the director, if not he is getting some nice press and attention on his name and Thor movie.

He also said if he did hypothetically sign on for T5 he would do something similar to what Nolan did with the Batman movies:

“We all love the first two and I actually went back and watched them again and my respect level only went up. I think there is another famous franchise that had a wonderful beginning and then turned a little bananas. Tim Burton‘s first Batman is just glorious and by the time it got around to nipples on costumes and all that stuff it sort of lost its way. And for (Christopher) Nolan to come in an say ‘I respect this material so much I’m going to take it up to *here,* that’s a great inspiration.’ I think any version, whoever is directing Terminator, would be very respectful and serve the first two and probably feel a bit more freedom by the end.”

What stands out in this statement is the mention of the first two Terminator movies. That Terminator 5 would be respectful and ‘serve’ the first two movies.

“Well, I would bracket anything I say from hereon because this is still a rumor. But, within the context of the rumor, I think that’s a specific case of two wonderful films at the beginning and two films that came later which were less wonderful. I think you absolutely would feel free to define yourself up against the latter ones, but you want to serve the first two, trying to be on the level. The funny thing is, those two films could not be more different than each other. The first one was more of a low-budget horror movie, while the second one was more an amazingly well-produced, glossy thriller with a sci-fi concept. They were both so successful, so there’s certain things you learn from them. If you’re going to try and enter the franchise, you better try to come in at that level. Also, it’s a challenging thing, because what they have in mind is a reboot but not an entirely different way of thinking.”

So this is a reboot but will perhaps play by the rules of the first two movies?

Megan Ellison the owner of the Terminator franchise also posts quotes of Sarah Connor on her Twitter account from time to time.

A Sequel or continuation in the world seen in the first two Terminator movies would indeed be popular with a major percentage of the fanbase but suggestion of freedom at the end suggests this is a new direction for the franchise that may open up the Terminator world, the word reboot still plays a big part in the worry.

His Nolan statements could also mean everything but Arnold is a reboot which is likely.

Alan Taylor also suggested that ‘leaks’ for cast and crew will begin anytime in the coming days/weeks.

So if you want to know everything… watch this space. The movie will star Arnold Schwarzenegger as ‘The Terminator’ once again.
