Fact check:

Confusion among fans has been caused by Collider, who claimed that James Cameron was overseeing a new remaster (specifically for this particular steelbook release).

The claim – Terminator 2: Judgment Day Best Buy Exclusive Steelbook is a new Transfer / Remaster Overseen by James Cameron

Collider states:

“This brand new Blu-Ray Steelbook will be exclusive to Best Buy and will include a new restoration of the 1991 classic in 4K Ultra HD, a process overseen by Cameron himself, which should appease those who were critical of the previous transfer. Along with the updated visuals and sound, the film will also a collection of bonus content and features, including a brand new documentary.”

Collider

False: This Blu-ray’s transfer is the 2017 remaster overseen by James Cameron for the release of Terminator 2: Judgment Day 3D. The 2017 transfer being the very transfer that fans have issues with due to the overuse of DNR (digital noise reduction).

Does it really make sense that this steelbook would get preferential treatment with a new transfer over STUDIOCANAL’s special 30th Anniversary vinyl, steelbook and Endo Skull collector’s editions? A root cause of the confusion could perhaps be Lionsgate recycling an outdated press release for the 2017 remaster? We didn’t receive Lionsgate’s press release for the Best Buy Exclusive, but numerous sources keep citing old information from that original T23D press release (which we did receive back in 2017).
Claims of a new documentary also point to it being 2017’s 55 minute documentary – T2: Reprogramming The Terminator.
