One of our biggest fears and concerns when Terminator 2: 3D was announced was that the movie would be altered for theaters to drive home a permanent PG-13 tone for the franchise; while this might not be the case domestically- it pretty much looks like it will certainly be the case for China’s release which we considered a given anyway due to the strict China censorship laws.

So, who is Wu Bing and why is she and Cameron restructuring Terminator 2? That we will get round to but let’s first discuss how T2 could be “restructured” in China.
How will T2 be changed exactly? That we do not know but usually for a movie to be green-lit for a Chinese release by the Chinese Government the project must have some reference to China, its culture, Chinese stars or a product placement like Government endorsed milk (Iron Man 3)… but we doubt they want to see a blade going through a milk carton, blood and milk mixed together doesn’t really sell milk now does it?
China and Russia have a pretty strong relationship at the moment so perhaps political references could be changed; for example when the T-800 (Schwarzenegger) describes the oncoming war and events, it could be as simple as changing events or dialogue that the China government wouldn’t approve of. References to Russia could be replaced with another country, one that the government doesn’t particularly like politically.
We could possibly see certain scenes of violence removed from the China cut too.
The ultimate limit (possible extreme) could be inserting scenes with Chinese actors, our thought processes would make us think along the lines of possibly a China division of Cyberdyne Systems and Marvel did something similar with IronMan 3 in order to get the movie allowed for release in the country in which Tony Stark has surgery in China- which was totally unrelated to the movie and even annoyed Chinese audiences who felt the scenes didn’t feel like the same movie.
China is familiar with T1 and T2 but apparently they are most familiar with the first two movies through piracy and bootlegging on the streets of China. So, if Chinese Terminator Fans already love the first two Terminator movies… how will the feel about one of their favorite movies being “restructured” or altered in any way… how would that sit with any fan? We wouldn’t like it, so why would China?
We have known that T2 has been ready for some time but we were asked to not report it, it feels like history is repeating itself with experiences we had with Paramount Pictures, so we are going to do and handle news how we want to from now on and if anyone has a problem with that then they are not on the side of the fans and that kind of attitude will continue to alienate us further from this property but it doesn’t mean we are going to pack our bags and leave Terminator to the political vultures to feast on the eyeballs of fans, oh no… it is just going to make us more determined to make sure the fans are treated better and to make sure that when we know; you will know too. We are independent from studios and it is that way for a reason, it allows us to stay true to the fans and offer you the facts and opinions- that is the way it should remain.

As you can see there are mentions of the Chinese version of the movie being restructured, that it only took 8 months to convert to 3D and yet loads of delays in release- missing the 25th Anniversary celebrations altogether.
This all feels very anti-climatic and it feels very much like the rest of the world’s Terminator Fans are not a priority anymore and haven’t been for some time.
It is very easy to understand why fans have walked away from this franchise but if you’re still here with us, waiting like we have been doing since Terminator 2 then you won’t mind continuing to wait but whether the wait will bring anything fruitful or enjoyable remains to be seen.
We hope the domestic release and other international audiences waiting for T2 get something out of this release but as it stands we are not sure if we will be paying to see T2: 3D in theaters, we might just wait for the home release instead as we can also say you will be getting new merchandise and most likely new Endoskull Blu-Ray editions of the movie.
We hope STUDIOCANAL will offer 3D AND 2D screenings of the movie and that the domestic cut remains untouched or edited. IT would also be nice if the movie marketed as Rated R because if it marketed as PG-13 we might just skip this event all together.
