Terminator 2 3D October China Release and New T2 Video Games Announced

T-1000 Terminator 2 Floor

According to a recent interview with Jim Cameron on Tuesday the 17th of May 2016; Terminator 2 3D will be released in China in October, no word on any US release or a specific release date concerning the rest of the world.

As we have mentioned previously- China never had a T2 theatrical release but instead gained popular traction in the home sales market. China has a strict policy regarding movies that led to the R Rated Deadpool being banned in China.

DMG Entertainment is working with James Cameron and his production company LightStrom Entertainment to use the most advanced 3D conversion technologies to “make the biggest and best 3D conversion film ever.

LightStrom? hmmm…

Apparently China didn’t have a way of screening imported movies back in 1991… but the first Terminator movie was released in Japan back in 1984 so it really doesn’t make much sense to us. The Terminator has also never had a theatrical release in China. This seems to be political, do we really believe China never saw western movies due to the fact that they couldn’t screen imported movies, but they could buy both the first two Terminator movies on home release? Or were the original R Rated productions considered too controversial by the Chinese government back then?

An October release misses the 25th Anniversary mark by roughly 3 months as T2 was released in the USA in July 1991. Whilst it is somewhat anti-climatic to miss that weekend in the US; at least we would rather it wasn’t rushed if it is better for the quality of the ‘product’. 3D is a gimmick but T2 does deserve a theatrical release but will the extreme censorship of China change the cut of movie… only China will find that out… unless we can get a china cut on DVD/Blu-Ray?

James Cameron stated:

I was thrilled to learn how popular ‘T2’ is in China. And I wanna thank the Chinese fans for their support, which is all the more meaningful considering ‘T2’ was never released in cinema there. And that’s why I’m excited about working with DMG to bring ‘T2’ into Chinese cinemas for the very first time,

It also looks like Arnold Schwarzenegger will be doing the rounds in China to promote the movie and Jim might too,- providing he doesn’t have a conflicting schedule. What about Linda, Robert and Edward? Do they not count? As far as we are aware Asia loved Edward Furlong more than Arnold Schwarzenegger.

Linda Hamilton was also snubbed (one of many times) by having her promotional tours/events cancelled on the first Terminator (same for Biehn) because the press were only interested in speaking to Arnold. Quite a fucking insult really. Can DMG rectify this or would they rather collude with Paramount Pictures to send Emilia Clarke out to China dressed as a Disney Princess- again?

2 new games will be attached to the movie but will they be console or online? Sadly we think they will be viral online PC/cinema tour event games.

One game is described as an online MMORPG and the other as a virtual reality game by Andy Anderson; a ‘top executive’ at DMG Entertainment . Good video games take time to produce and this just seems rushed to us. Yes, we want games but we don’t want them to be disposable in the way that Genisys approached the gaming platform with a lackluster attempt to attract gamers… Will the T2 MMORPG be similar to the Terminator Salvation (FIG) Fan Immersion Game? They are going to have to show us something special to get us interested in these games.

James Cameron loves China and re-releasing his movies there in 3D so he can break previous records without actually making a new movie. AVATAR is a fine example of the Jim/China connection.

So, is Terminator all about China now and nothing else? Will we ever get back to the dark horror roots of the saga,- or are we, as fans, fated forever to be trapped in a commercial hell where studios will determine the type of Terminator movies we see in future based almost solely on a possible positive fiscal response from Asia?

It’s all politics and is T2 just being used as a tool to drag China back for more trashy Skydance Terminator trash?… highly likely.

We want T2 3D to be successful for Jim Cameron and Linda Hamilton but if T2 3D is just another cynical way to manipulate China and to alter the outcome of box office takings in future in regard to the property,- we simply see it as more damage than good to the future of Terminator as we know it.

DMG Entertainment is also trying to buy shares in Paramount Pictures… If the future of Terminator is China… then this is just simply money orientated and the integrity was lost a long time ago.

We want to support this property, why else would we dedicate years to this franchise? Quite frankly at this stage we wish we wouldn’t have bothered but you can be sure of one thing… we will continue to fight for what we believe in and if that means taking on the global corporates and making sure fans are educated in the truth- we will continue to do so!

We are fans of what Terminator used to be… not what it has become. Is the re-release of T2 just a cynical way to paper-over the hate the franchise has been experiencing over the last three movies so they can milk us again in the near future? Highly likely!

James Cameron can’t be objective,- but can we be objective? Yes, we fucking can! As long as the studios hinge the success of the Terminator brand on China/Asia; the real fans will never get the movies they so rightly deserve. A good movie is loved the world over- a bad movie is loved by few, and studios basing prospective success on one demographic or geographical location is short-sighted, foolish and quite frankly insulting. We trusted Jim Cameron but Paramount and Skydance have instilled a certain amount of distrust in some fans with regards to the creator of Terminator and his future involvement.

Digital Domain (Cameron’s other VFX company which he co-founded) filed for bankruptcy in 2013 and majority share-hold/ownership was taken over by Hong Kong company ‘Sun Innovation’.

James Cameron refused to make Terminator 3 because it was all about “business” and nothing else… why have his ideals changed? Money, as always, is obviously a huge incentive.

Does China now own Jim Cameron’s ass? Is he purely a company man now and nothing more? We hope not.
