Terminator 2: 3D Conversion Opts Out Of 2016 China Release for 2017 “Cash In”

Terminator 2 3D was on schedule for an October 2016 release which, without public knowledge, changed to a planned December 2016 release schedule but now that is changing AGAIN to next year. It looks like a lack of confidence in Terminator 2: 3D in being able to battle competition at the box office in China is causing a continued delay to the release.

China is now priority number one where Terminator is concerned… that helped Terminator Genisys but does it really help the franchise overall? We don’t think so but 3D is more popular in China than other markets around the world, in fact 3D really isn’t that popular outside of China.

Hollywood seemed confident that even if you release a bad movie (Genisys) it doesn’t matter because international audiences will pay; meaning China will pay, Terminator Genisys being a fine example of a movie missing the mark domestically but China saved Terminator Genisys from worldwide embarrassment. China is not bringing in the figures and revenue that Hollywood expected to already have in the bag but why is China not bringing the money in that Hollywood considered to be a given? Is china wising up to bad movies a little later than the rest of us or is it an economic issue?
Time will tell.

Deadline.com Exclusively reports:

One of the most anticipated films of the year-end in China will have audiences waiting a little longer. The 3D remastering of Terminator 2: Judgment Day has opted out of a crowded late 2016 Middle Kingdom slot in favor of what could now be a first-quarter 2017 unveiling.

Deadline reports that there is an overload of Hollywood titles being released this November, which roughly translates as an increase in competition in the Chinese market.

The film was looking at an early December slot — DMG’s Point Break last year was successfully released as the last Hollywood movie before the PROC blackout in December. But with screen share already a dogfight given so many films in the market, it made more sense to wait.

So, what movies are causing the delay…

Fantastic Beasts And Where To Find Them as well as the coming behemoth The Great Wall. That key component would have been lacking on T2 which is believed to be the most advanced 3D technology/4K conversion to date and would benefit nicely from the format.

The mighty T2 is being delayed because of the Harry Potter spin-off and Matt Damon. What confidence Hollywood has in the mighty T2.

We’ll know more as a date gets solidified, but for now, opting out of a 2016 bottleneck looks like a smart move with this film more likely to breathe — and cash in — at another moment.

Oh no… our most hated words “cash in” being used to describe T2 3D… *face palm*.

So, there we have it, we live in a world where T2: Trainspotting 2 (which looks like utter shit) is trending more on Twitter as a hashtag than Terminator 2. Thanks Danny Boyle; for stealing one of our favorite movie’s identities to feed like a parasite off the T2: 3D release….

Of course we have Skydance Media and Paramount Pictures to thank for the continued mishandling of the Terminator property, so badly so that even the mighty T2 isn’t considered viable enough to go against Matt Damon and Fantastic Beasts and where to find them, movies we have no interest in at all.

This actually isn’t funny anymore, it was never funny to begin with but is this kind of stop-start doing T2 any favors? We have no doubt T2 should do well in China but what kind of message are we giving to the world by not storming ahead with a release? We were told a marketing storm would be coming by an insider on T2: 3D…

Can we stop sitting on this franchise and involve the original creators to restore faith and quality back into this franchise… because this is beyond ridiculous now and it isn’t professional it is cack-handed.
