James Cameron Producing Terminator 2 3D for 2016 Worldwide Release

WARNING: THIS ARTICLE CONTAINS FLASHING IMAGES

The rumblings and talk of a 3D conversion of Terminator 2: Judgment Day resurfaced back in 2014 and fans worldwide have wanted it to happen, but now due to the demand for Terminator in Asia it’s happening (according to THR ) but this also comes with some concerns for fans that shouldn’t be ignored…

DMG and StudioCanal will work with Cameron to supervise and produce the 3D conversion using the latest technology from StereoD.

The new Terminator 2 3D is targeting a worldwide release in 2016, but a key target market is understood to be China, where the conversion will make its global premiere courtesy of DMG’s China branch, DMG Yinji, working with China Film Group.

The Terminator franchise has a wide following in China, now the world’s second-largest film market, but Terminator 2 has never been given a theatrical release there. The latest film in the franchise, Terminator: Genisys, grossed $112.8 million in China earlier this year, compared to $89.7 million domestically.

Terminator Genisys was a movie made with Asia totally in mind and TheTerminatorFans.com explored the whole concept with a journalism piece called Terminator Genisys Is Set On Breaking Asia!

Of course Terminator Genisys did well in Asia, Terminator Genisys is an untrue product which feeds off a well established franchise and even though T2 was never released in theaters, you will probably find the sequels did and in turn the first two Terminator movies have a strong and firm footing with the Asian market in the home release department. T1 and T2 are great movies after all.

Cameron stated:

Next year marks the 25th anniversary of Terminator 2 and that seemed like the perfect time to bring it back but this time in an all-new 3D version. If you’ve never seen it, this’ll be the version you want to see and remember.

After Jim Cameron’s endorsement of Terminator Genisys; do we believe him when he says this will be the version of T2 we want to remember? “Not yet”… especially when he told The Terminator Fans…

YOU ARE GOING TO LOVE THIS MOVIE

We did not report the Terminator Genisys endorsement as we simply didn’t like/appreciate or believe in it. Sorry Jim. Whoever came up with that idea should worry about their (over-paid) job if they are not in a position of power.

Ok… if we get the original theatrical US cut in a 3D conversion then we are totally happy to sit back and watch it destroy Terminator Genisys at the Chinese box office… Jim Cameron also is entitled to earn more money from this franchise, after all,- without him it would not exist.

But…

If this is a conversion that’s totally fine by us but the real question we should ask ourselves as fans of T2 is; Are they going to fuck with the cut of the movie or the VFX… ie. Is the smiling Arnold deleted scene going to return for China in the theaters. Arnold’s shit eating grin should have stayed deleted but those gremlins at Skydance and Paramount couldn’t help themselves… they obviously drank too much water (or something else) after midnight.

The US market is now wising up to bad movies and the PG-13 trend of cashing in on franchises once bathed in blood. Asia has much to learn as they assist with the problem but as always it is business, but does it mean they like the movies they have been given? The answer to that is apparently not. A majority of them do hate the bad CGI movies they are given as much as the next viewer… this includes Terminator Genisys. China is very strict about viewing and censorship but as Terminator becomes habitually aimed at the Asian market it has in our eyes become compromised. There doesn’t seem to be any give or take anymore, instead it’s more a case of studios telling us to be thankful for what they ram down our fucking throats,- ‘here, swallow it or fuck off’.

If you didn’t see Terminator Genisys at the theater and you lived in China and saw the very different marketing that the movie had there then maybe you would have bought tickets too…

Asia got everything better (marketing) but they still got the same shit movie in the end…

The strict censorship could effect how Asian audiences see the movie at theaters, anything deemed as damaging to their people, their government, the economy, their way of life will now effect the Terminator franchise as we know it. Hopefully it doesn’t effect T2: JD 3D.

This is also a way to boost the profile for Avatar sequels and make the world into vegetarian vegan-isms as Arnold Schwarzenegger and Jim Cameron become the rulers of our planet with the power of the green energy eco message and also a way for Jim to get competitive again after having some of his movie records beaten in Asia. The King of the Sea is resurfacing to take the planet BACK.

For a whole new generation of fans, it is truly a chance to see the movie that really set the bar for action and effects that all the movies today are trying to top, in a completely new way — in the theater and in 3D,” said DMG CEO Dan Mintz, adding: “We are committed to making the conversion the highest quality in order to live up to the expectations of the film’s many fans around the world.

Jim Cameron said the soup was pissed in but recycling and filtration teaches us we can eat that soup if it is treated properly by Jim Cameron at his local water recycling plant.

A serious Terminator fan would hope this could re-ignite Jim Cameron’s passion for the series and to give WORLDWIDE audiences everything they want not just Asia. If Terminator movies were good they would do well in the USA but not even TheTerminatorFans.com staff wanted to pay one cent to watch Terminator Genisys. If it isn’t a true canon continuation of the second movie then simply count us out.

Jim Cameron endorsed Terminator Genisys and for that reason we will not jump in glee at the possibility of seeing Terminator 2 AGAIN, just because it is in 3D… yes it will be nice to have improved Hi-Res graphics tweaks and improved sound etc and the possibility of T2 hitting the theaters is a fun prospect. It will do well in Asia but will it be re-classified to PG-13?

Was his endorsement part of a bigger plan? While some fans adamantly suggest he took a back-handed payment to endorse the movie could it simply be a studio calling in a favor and it was a poor marketing decision that told the real fans everything they needed to know about Terminator Genisys before even seeing it, even Arnold Schwarzenegger was displeased with studios and the endorsement. The glint in the eye and the smirk of a smile delivered the message clearly to the old wave fans but they are the best fans and the most loyal and they actually have brain cells that the studios didn’t expect them to have.

Has one of the most bad-ass horror icons finally been reduced to playing a parody of his former self? Affirmative.

Without Linda Hamilton’s iconic performance as Sarah Connor in T2 and the iconic villainous perfection of Robert Patrick as ‘The T-1000’ it was the gateway drug to PG-13 Arnold hell, it only took a few more giant strides to take the Terminator series way off balance. It was the beginning of the end for the series, a smartly executed self-destruct it would seem, for if the series continued without Cameron it would die 1000 deaths at the hands of greed and commercialism. Terminator 2 is cinema gold but the franchise today is not what the original fans bought into. The franchise right now is dead, it isn’t as popular as it should be and if Terminator Genisys is the future of the franchise then we simply can’t support it, that doesn’t mean we don’t care, screaming into the ears of people who don’t listen or care about the integrity of what Terminator actually should be has become simply boring for many fans and we receive messages from people who have given up hope that the series can be restored… even with Jim Cameron’s involvement.

Will he rise to the the challenge of healing the franchise or stay retired and unbeaten? Will Terminator become an Asian product that just doesn’t satisfy any market but Japan?

Terminator 2 in 3D; what could go wrong? Hopefully it doesn’t or expect an angry wave of Terminator Fans. Emilia Clarke agreed the fans were rabid but they haven’t seen them foam at the mouth  well “not yet”…

Will Terminator 2 become Genisysed or will it live up to the legisys?!

If the cut is messed with… could the future CODA (deleted ending) make a new return with the modern day Linda Hamilton spliced in? If Jim Cameron wants to shut down the franchise for good… this is how he could do it but will he? but deleted scenes are deleted for a reason…

Working with Studiocanal, Cameron and the China-linked studio will create the digitally remastered 3D conversion with StereoD, for a worldwide release in 2016.
