Exclusive: Terminator Genisys 3D to be a 2D to 3D Conversion and Custom 3D Glasses

Terminator Genisys RealD 3D

The trailer for Terminator Genisys revealed that the movie would also be released in RealD 3D and IMAX 3D. A source close to the production of Terminator Genisys told us a while back that the movie was not filmed with two sets of images recorded with a 3D camera method. This would make Terminator Genisys a ‘2D to 3D conversion’. With a 2D conversion the 3D is derived from a 2D image set.

Wikipedia explains:

2D to 3D video conversion (also called 2D to stereo 3D conversion and stereo conversion) is the process of transforming 2D (“flat”) film to 3D form, which in almost all cases is stereo, so it is the process of creating imagery for each eye from one 2D image.

We contacted RealD 3D. The company provides the 3D technology to theaters, they are not involved in the production or post production of the movie. They couldn’t tell us much about Terminator Genisys but they did make a heavy comparison to ‘Gravity’ which was a successful movie with an amazing standard of 3D and was a 2D to 3D conversion.

Gravity 3D even got a good review by one of our staff members…

Jashykins quote from TheTerminatorFans.com Gravity Review:

The visuals are outstanding. I would highly recommend seeing this in Imax and in 3D. I am usually not a big 3D person and I think that most movies can do without it. Even Avatar didn’t need 3D in my opinion. But Gravity is the only movie I believe needs to be experienced in 3D. Viewing the movie in 3D made my experience even better.

Even James Cameron said that…

Gravity is the best space film ever made”

Overall this is quite common practice for 3D releases. Staff at TheTerminatorFans.com wanted this next Terminator movie to be filmed in 2D. The RealD 3D and IMAX 3D experiences will be a bonus for 3D-heads out there and I’m sure the 3D experience will have some moments of ducking or diving in your seat… the T-1000 will surely throw some liquid metal your way,-  Arnold may be blasting some Remington Shotgun rounds IN YOUR FACE, or maybe Emilia Clarke will point blank you in the chest with her ultimate sniper rifle skills.

Also there is a high possibility you will be getting some custom 3D glasses branded with the Terminator Genisys logo. You could indeed be sat looking like ‘The Terminator’ in the theater while watching Terminator Genisys! RealD 3D promised us more info on the glasses, as soon as we know more we will update this post!

It is now a trend for ReadD to offer viewers custom 3D glasses, Skydance and Paramount are no stranger to providing such 3D glasses with their RealD 3D collaborations/releases.

Fans are also eagerly awaiting a 2D to 3D conversion of Terminator 2: Judgment Day; which Jim Cameron has been hinting at for years… Although it would make him more money if he did that when he gets the rights back in a few years. So if it doesn’t happen soon expect a bit of a wait!

Also in another of our Exclusive stories Daniel Robichaud (Animation Director of T2:3D) responded to the idea that T2:3D (the ride) could be a home release… he said it was now possible and you can find out the details by clicking here.

Make sure you keep an eye out for the official RealD 3D and IMAX 3D branding when selecting a theater to watch Terminator Genisys in 3D, to ensure you are watching the best standard of 3D in Terminator Genisys.

So how do you plan on viewing the movie; in 2D, RealD 3D or IMAX 3D?

UPDATE:

We have since contacted RealD 3D to let them know that hardcore fans would love a Gargoyles ANSI Classic style of custom glasses to watch the movie with in 3D theaters.

Terminator Genisys will also be available to watch in standard 2D.

ComingSoon.net has some more information about the IMAX 3D release. Which goes to support the above story.

The IMAX 3D release of Terminator Genisys will be digitally re-mastered into the image and sound quality of The IMAX Experience with proprietary IMAX DMR (Digital Re-mastering) technology. The crystal-clear images, coupled with IMAX’s customized theatre geometry and powerful digital audio, create a unique environment that will make audiences feel as if they are in the movie.

Additional quotes from producer David Ellison…

“We are so proud of the world we have built in Terminator Genisys and are thrilled that audiences will be able to experience the film in IMAX and IMAX 3D,” said Ellison. “The IMAX experience is the most immersive film experience in the world, and I am thrilled that fans of the franchise and newcomers alike will be able to experience the film in this premium format.”

… and Greg Foster, Senior Executive Vice President, IMAX Corp. and CEO of IMAX Entertainment.

“This film marks IMAX’s first foray into the Terminator franchise and we’re thrilled to be a part of it and team up once again with Alan Taylor and our friends at Paramount Pictures and Skydance Productions,” “We believe it’s going to be a gangbusters summer at the movies next year, and Terminator Genisys is sure to be one of the season’s most anticipated movies for IMAX fans worldwide.”
