Edward Furlong Talks Terminator: Dark Fate Involvement

Edward Furlong John Connor Terminated

Ever since James Cameron announced that Edward Furlong would be starring in Terminator: Dark Fate at Comic Con, Terminator Fans have been confused about his role and what his actual involvement in the movie was going to be.

Fans privy to leaks knew he would be starring as a digitally de-aged version of himself and that he would be shot at a beach bar but James Cameron’s announcement made many believe that Eddie had more to do with the movie than met the eye.
Fake news also started circulating that he would appear as an older version of himself in the movie (General John Connor).

Edward finally clarifies his exact involvement at Days of the Dead:

“Honestly, it was so weird. They were telling me, ‘We need you to come in and we want you to play 14-year-old you.’ And all I could think about was that movie with Bette Davis – Whatever Happened to Baby Jane? I kept thinking of that movie,” said Furlong of the experience of portraying a child as an adult actor thanks to the de-aging. “I wasn’t with Linda. Tim Miller was there. They had a monitor and I was acting off the image on the monitor. It’s very, very technical. And you have to be very precise. There were only certain ways I could move. Because I had to match the body double,” explained Furlong of the process of watching a scene that had already been shot with a double, then reacting to it himself, while portraying the young John Connor character. “It was weird. We had dialogue and stuff originally like that at the table but it was a trip. I’m not used to doing that.”

Tim Miller has previously stated that Edward, Linda and Arnold went in to do performance capture and scans for a day – that would make you think that they all performed together but this seems to not be the case.

The young body double that Edward Furlong was matching his movements to was Jude Collie. We managed to interview Jude recently and you can listen the interview below.

Edward Furlong has previously spoken about losing his T3 role to an overdose relating to celebrating securing the John Connor role for Rise of the Machines, and here he tells the story again… News of the overdose got back to the studio and he was replaced with Nick Stahl.

“Essentially, I overdosed on drugs. I had a contract. And that always really bummed me out.”

Also not new news but Edward has not seen any of the other Terminator movies…

“I have never even seen the other ones after that but John Connor is what changed my life. I had never done anything before that. And I’ve been making a living because of that, so it’s a very close thing to me and it was a little bittersweet doing it. That’s my role. To get it back in the long run was good.”

Edward has shared his admiration, to this very day, for T2 co-star Arnold Schwarzenegger.

“I grew up watching Predator and Total Recall. I really looked up to Arnold throughout that whole movie. Out of all the actors I’ve worked with, he is an amazing role model. And I still look up to him. I really do.”
